Master Lock 141D

LockReviewer’s Take:

You get what you pay for, and it’s not much.

Masterlock says:

The Master Lock No. 141D Covered Solid Body Padlock features a 1-9/16in (40mm) wide black vinyl covered body for scratch and corrosion resistance. The 1/4in (6mm) diameter shackle is 13/16in (21mm) long and made of hardened steel, offering extra resistance to cutting and sawing. The 4-pin cylinder prevents picking and the dual locking levers provide resistance against prying and hammering. The Limited Lifetime Warranty provides peace of mind from a brand you can trust.

I’m not sure when 4 pins meant “security”, but I guess it’s better than 3 pins. This lock has been rattling around my desk drawer for far too long. The 141 does have a standard hardened shackle; however, the lock is far too easy for a novice to rake open to provide any real protection. Of course, any lock is pickable; however, in my opinion a lock should provide enough protection to keep a potential thief busy for at least a few minutes. The 141 will likely not last that long.

Given its size, the 141 was designed to be used on small cabinets, luggage and lockers. The build of the 141 itself feels heavy and is presumably resistant to brute force. Unsurprisingly, the pins are standard. The shackle is skinny enough that it would likely be butter to a cheap pair of bolt cutters.

Top Amazon Review:

This works perfectly for my intended purpose of securing my belongings at the gym. I read reviews that smaller locks did not quite fit, but this one works perfectly and is a decent price. It is fairly light and has a nice feel with the [admittedly cheap] plastic cover. Two keys makes me feel better in case I lose one.

For all consumer-grade small locks, it seems that there are always a few people in the reviews who complain that they are easy to pick. You are not going to get impenetrable security for $6. I am sure that any mildly determined person can easily pick any lock in this price range. Deal with it. These locks are only to keep the “honest thieves” from taking your stuff. And for that, they work great! – David (5 Stars)

David rates this lock 5 stars while understanding that the 141 provides little to no protection. “Honest thief” is not a term I am familiar with. As is the case with Amazon reviews, people are happy with this lock so long as it does not rust and the key works. However, its vulnerability to raking is the real problem here. Master Lock ranks it as a 4/10 security.

Bypass Warning: Curiously, you can comb this lock as well. I don’t know one person who carries comb picks with them, but there is too much room in the chamber allowing a comb to work in the first place. The shackle feels secure, but the lock is susceptible to shimming.

VERDICT: The reason people buy the 141D is because it has a great pricepoint. However, it is bypassed every way imaginable. This lock would probably only be useful in high trafficked or monitored areas for short periods of time.
